As I hiked the JMT

"As I hiked the JMT in the highest recorded snowyear in August of 2023, there were still a lot of snow fields we had to cross. We had our ice axes with us, but often we were too lazy to put our packs down to get our ice axes. Then I ran into a hiker who had a Black Diamond Whippet. Long story short, I bought the whipper ready trekking poles and the whippet, and that will be my instrument for my planned PCT next year. It is easy to put onto the trekking pole, and much strdier as I expected. This is a high quality product, and I highly recommend it."

Superior

"Upgraded from the original Whippet attachment to this one and have to say it's been a great move. Significantly lighter and more comfortable in the hand when you've got it on the pole. Also greatly prefer that the point is not "ice axe" sharp. Being a splitboarder, I'll often ride with the whippet pole in one hand on the descent to pile along in flatter traverses, or as extra security on steep faces/chutes with inconsistent snow. That being said, I find this "Alpine" style attachment can stab into the snow well enough to self-arrest, but is less likely to stab into Me if things go sideways - I have a few holes in gear from the old style head. Overall: a very sensible upgrade to the original."

Whippet Attachment well designed

"The attachment easily and sturdily connects to my compactor poles. Its light and doesn't take much space up in my backpack. It allows me to travel with less stuff while maintaining a reasonable degree of safety."

Extra protection

"I'm really impressed with the lightness and beautiful design of this attachment. Integrates seamlessly with the new Black Diamond ski poles, and provides an extra margin of safety on sketchy days in the steeps and on the bootpack. This is a nice feature in addition to the ice axe, and really nice to have on steep days when you probably should be skiing with an ice axe. Lightweight and convenient packability make this a no-brainer to keep in your daily ski backpack."

Perfect!

"Safety first! Whether splitboarding or hiking/climbing, in the split second it takes to lose your footing, this is the perfect tool to have. Always attached and ready to use when needed! Pairs perfectly with the BD John J compactor split poles!"

Great poles - a bit

"Great poles - a bit lighter than my very old backcountry Black Diamond poles and the Whippet attachment will provide more peace of mind during hard snow spring conditions."

Sturdy and Essential!

"Recently acquired the Alpine Whippet Attachment from Black Diamond and it's quickly become a staple in my mountain treks. The design is robust yet lightweight, offering an added layer of safety without being a burden to carry. Its seamless integration with existing Black Diamond poles is a big plus, allowing for quick adjustments in varied terrains. Notably, the self-arrest feature is a great add-on, giving a peace of mind during those steep descents. Easy to install and remove, it's a straightforward yet invaluable tool for any alpinist. Highly recommended for safer and more confident mountain adventures!"

Works!

"Not the most complex piece of equipment; but it attaches securely and does what it’s supposed to do when used! Not sure I’d forego a real axe or pair of tools for longer or higher consequence sections of steep side hilling or booting but I like having this as an option for trips below that threshold."

Whippet good!!

"Super psyched to have this attachment on my whippet ski pole. Not only does it dig into steep snow for a. steep slope. climb, it also doubles as a handy hook around tree trunks and branches when approaching climbs in steep woods."
